A New Breeders' Association

by Rosemary Newson |  Tuesday, 1 June 2010 A New Breeders' Association

Earlier this year a new Alpaca Breeders Association was formed.  The Alpaca Breeders Association of New Zealand (or ABANZ) had its inaugural meeting on 14th February 2010.

 The ABANZ’s Vision

They believe that by producing a large quantity of high quality Alpaca Fibre, and by adding value to this fibre, it will enhance the long-term future of the alpaca industry in NZ and this will be the foundation for a predictable, profitable and sustainable Alpaca Farming Business here in New Zealand.

As Alpaca Fleece is a consumable alpaca commodity, viable, high end and high quality New Zealand Alpaca Products must be produced and sold.

They also believe that the profit from product sales will enhance our alpaca farm incomes and attract more potential investors into our Industry.

By giving Breeders ABANZ’s direction in terms of the Fleece requirements, they will select the Stud Males that will produce the quality of raw fleece that we are seeking.

We at Sonric Suri Alpacas www.sonric.co.nz  have been carefully selecting our Stud Males for producing quality raw fibre for a couple of years now.  After attending various workshops that discussed producing quality fibre and what the processors/end users want, and after having used fibre ourselves to produce various items of apparel, we came to some definite conclusions about what we needed to breed for in our fibre characteristics in order to produce a high quality Suri fibre.  Already, we have seen some great results from our new breeding strategy and look forward to even greater improvements as the years go by.
