Crystal Ball Wanted

by Kristyn Mitchell |  Monday, 8 February 2010 Crystal Ball Wanted

I've been talking to people, and looking through various message boards, and looking for inspiration and guidance.  It seems we are moving on again this year, so we're looking at jobs again, and trying to sort out a budget that won't be laughed at by the bank, as we figure out if we can go 50/50, or should we stay contract.

It seems I can't go on being financially illiterate and inept at budgeting.  We have got on OK in the last 6 years as a one-income family as I raised the kids, mostly by keeping spending under control.  Now we are thinking of borrowing some real money so I'm putting these figures down on paper and trying to make them mean something.  I know you have to start somewhere, but does anybody else find this hard?  Or is it just me?

There is so much variation in the dairy industry – size of job, number of staff, production capability, facilities; maintenance issues; hours required at work…There is also a huge variation in the return that contractors and sharemilkers get for the work and the investment they put in.

Some people seem to struggle on through life and others build on their equity year on year.  Give two families the same start, and they can end up in very different places.  What can make the difference?:

  • Bravery to get out of a rut you're stuck in
  • A long term plan
  • Financial understanding
  • Recognising opportunity when it comes along
  • Luck in finding the right jobs with the right farm owners
  • Working smarter, not harder
  • Upskilling
  • Good guidance
  • Figuring out what's important and not settling for any less

Then there's another family, who choose another path entirely.  They find a way to make enough money out of what they are really good at and enjoy very much.  Maybe not heaps of dough, but enough to enjoy a balanced life.

So if anyone has a crystal ball, or maybe a contact number for the ghost of Christmas future, can you pass it on to me?  I'd like to see what our life looks like in the future, in several different scenarios.  Or maybe enter a comment and give me your own inspiring story…
