Buying Chainsaws

by Logan Tudehope |  Thursday, 17 September 2009 Buying Chainsaws

How's this for an appalling retailer story. My 87 year old uncle had some trees felled at his beach house and wanted to chop them up for firewood. He'd never owned or even used a chainsaw but trundled into his local hardware chain (who shall remain nameless) and made enquiries regarding the purchase of one. He's in pretty good nick but at the end of the day he's still a very old man asking questions about chainsaws which would indicate a near total ignorance of their workings.

You guessed it - the clown in the shop sold him one. Fortunately we found out about it and were able to discourage him before he attempted the job and I finished up doing the job for him with my chainsaw. He got his money back on the saw but it could have all been so much worse. The guy in the shop is a disgrace.

  • I can identify with your story. We were horrified when we came to visit my husbands mother, in her late 70's, with poor balance, showing off the new electric chainsaw she had just purchased. When my husband asked her how she was using it, she very proudly said she propped herself up against something in her sloping carport and cut small logs which she had placed in a cradle on a downhill slope from where she stood. We felt quite sick when we imagined what could have happened. Needless to say, the chainsaw mysteriously disappeared.
