Lessons in Trade and Commerce

by Logan Tudehope |  Thursday, 1 October 2009 Lessons in Trade and Commerce

I figured that, at the age of two and a half, it was high time The Wee Man had his first lesson on trade and commerce so the two of us loaded a shovel and a bunch of plastic shopping bags into the Landy and headed for the back paddock where a mate's horse had been grazing for a few months.

We spent a couple of hours filling up the bags with horse manure until we had twenty. Unfortunately it started raining after about seventeen bags and by the time we headed back up the track had got too wet so the Landy remained in disgrace at the bottom for a week.

The next weekend the neighbours kindly towed me out and we proudly put the Landy on the side of the road with a sign advertising horse manure for a dollar a bag. Within a few minutes a car stopped, took photos and bought no bags. By the end of the day we'd sold no bags. A girl I know felt sorry for me and bought two. The next weekend we put it out again and sold five more. I still have thirteen and am told that later in spring might be a more popular time for horse manure so will try again very soon. I kind of hope The Wee Man wasn't paying too much attention.
