We are all abhorred by the carnage and terror young drivers cause on our roads. On the flipside we make it ridiculously easy for these drivers to get behind the wheel of a vehicle far too powerful for their skills and experience to control. I don't know what else we expected to happen. To me the equation is remarkably simple, as is the solution.
Horsepower restrictions are what we need. You can't have a grunty car until you've proven you can cope - be that by exhaustive testing or reaching a particular age. What wholesome activities do you require that grunty car for anyway? To hell with the wet-behind-the-ears dogooders and get those car-crushers working! A tragic problem calls for drastic action. Compulsory 3rd party insurance and significantly higher registration fees for suped-up vehicles would help as well.
I have believed for some years now that the driving age should be lifted to 18 years old and like motorcyclists there should be a power or engine size restriction. I have in the past suggested that 50-60 kw would be a starting point and remain in force for 2 years. If they want to go fast do it the right way and go to a race track.
