Horses in the City

by Samantha van der Sande |  Friday, 9 October 2009 Horses in the City

Last night we took a pair of Clydesdales to Skycity for the horse drawn transportation at the Effies awards.  It was a wonderful evening, but due to the event finishing so late (after 10.30pm) we were working in the dark, and the horses had to deal with the aspects of Auckland nightlife.

The boys looked magnificent striding out around the busy streets.  Somehow the brass furnishings we had spent hours polishing took on a whole new beauty glistening under the city lights, and the glowing carriage lamps provided a somewhat magical ambience to the entire experience. It really was quite a sight!

We always find the reaction of the Aucklanders is different to most other places we have the horses on show. I suppose it's not often you see two enormous Clydesdales powering through the main street of Auckland CBD.  Some onlookers had literally never touched a horse in their lives, so the whole experience was very exciting for these people. One busload of men who were visiting from India were so excited to see the horses in the city, the act of simply touching the horses seemed to have made their trip.

A young girl who appeared around a street corner while lost amongst her own thoughts was so shocked when she looked up to see the Clydesdales, she almost jumped out of her skin dropping her takeaway food on the ground in the process.

The party that was transported around the city streets on the wagon were just beaming.  As they sang and waved at interested bystanders, it became clear that there's a love and admiration for the romanticism of the horse drawn era I don't think will ever die, and it's times like this that makes this profession so thoroughly enjoyable.
