Foaling Fiasco 2

by Samantha van der Sande |  Tuesday, 8 September 2009 Foaling Fiasco 2

Today the wee filly foal is much stronger and more filled out.  Good to see.  Nick went to visit around 9am today to find that the foal was having repeated attempts at drinking from the mare herself.

The owner of the horses had been feeding the foal from the bottle and said she was still reluctant to drink from the bottle.

They decided to try again with the foal on the mare, but remained very aware of the fact that it may be a lot more difficult today due to the mare's tight udder.  Nick was very prepared for a sore, irritable mare which of course would make the whole operation a whole lot trickier!

While the mare was held by her owner, Nick carefully and gently tried to get the foal suckling. Luckily the mare was once again very patient.  The foal was a lot stronger and brighter today which certainly helped, although it was still not an easy task by any means!  To Nick's delight the foal did seem to latch on today and at least had a very small feed from the mare.

We won't throw away at the bottle just yet, and the foal still has some learning to do before we're satisfied.  I think some good progress was made today.
