Is "sustainable" the new buzz word? In all our efforts to make NZ farming more sustainable is this costing us more than what its worth? Is there anyone who is making a real effort to make their farm partly (or mainly) sustainable? Would like to hear your thoughts and ideas :)

Its easier for us I guess as we only have 5ac but we are doing all we can with our own milk, eggs, garden etc. most of our rubbish is reused-composted. We are now looking at solar and wind production as we are in a high wind area, just above the estuary. I do believe we need to slow down as a country and go some what back to the way our grandparents did things. There is too much of the business side of things and not enough retaining the old and working ways. Sustainability must also help the environment as well as our selves. The corporate world dont want us to be sustainable, they want us to keep on buying from them. We get wrapped up in the marketing garbage and believe it instead of working out the truth for ourselves and following what has been already proven.

Hi There I have recently started in a role called Biodiversity Ambassador with the Hurunui District Council and would like to talk to any Hurunui farmer/resident that will listen about how they can be more ecologically sustainable. Cheers, Dale

Making the most of the resources tha one has to hand and recycle as much as possible. This often means a change of habbits. I facilitate discussion groups in the Waikato and Manawatu where the main theme is how to get the best production and net farm opporating profit using sustainable technics. Call me if you would like to get involved. Bill Quinn also facilitates similar groups in various parts of the country. Peter Bacchus, Paeroa. (07) 862 7929
