Hi, I planted kumara for the first time this year. I followed the instructions from the garden centre and planted them in a trench and from East to West. They are growing fine and look good. I checked on root development a month or so ago and there was not much happening. I'm near Kawhia - will the leaves die down when they are ready to harvest? Thanks, Cath
Hi Cath. I'm a virgin kumara planter also, and whilst I haven't checked on root development recently, I was told the leaves would begin to yellow close to harvest time. My patch has gone ballistic, and i've been entwining the runners over on top of themselves, but definitely haven't seen any yellowing leaves yet. We might have to be patient! AJ
Thanks! That information will probably save them from more tampering. I will wait till the leaves go yellow.
Howdy, The South Waikato has had a frost! That makes leaves yellow REAL fast. I wasn't too hopefull as a first timer myself, but after rooting around my single tubers had produced a fine crop off each plant. Wrapped!!!
We didn't have a frost out by the coast, and the leaves weren't exactly yellow but I harvested a couple plants anyway. It was an amazing haul! About half of them were as big as the ones in the market, and the other half are still good eating! I really didn't expect it!
