Welcome to the second Rural Trader Equine blog. With the dominance of herbal treatments and remedies nowadays, I thought I would raise a few questions around these and see what people’s success stories are
I am lucky enough to be the owner of a horse that was an orphan foal from birth. This boy (who is now 15 years old) has been one of the most loyal and well mannered horses I have ever owned and I swear he will remain with me until the day he dies.
In competition a nervy or spooky horse can really affect final results, and at times, it’s a difficult problem to get around.
Well we've rolled around to that time of year again, the time of year when some equine competitors and owners take a deep breath at the fact that the tensions and busyness of the competition season have drawn to an end, and turn their four-legged friends out to pasture for the winter.
While some of us may not be lucky enough to have access to acres of rolling land to ride across, road riding is probably the next best option for most riders and their equines.
Hello again equine folk. It seems the winter break has drawn to an end and it's time to shake off the mud and get ready for another action packed season of equine action
Do you feel unsafe riding your horse on the road? Here's a way you can help to have things changed...
Pampering ponies - are we weakening our equines by simply caring too much?
Here we go again, another breeding season rolls around. This year we've been presented with some challenges...
The wee Clydesdale foal makes some steady progress today
Sadly we've come to the end of the road with this wee baby
If it's not one thing, it's another.
The second part to my terrible weekend with Jordy...
Isn't it crazy how everything can change in a day...
What's with the cold snap lately?
I suppose it's not often you see two enormous Clydesdales powering through the main street of Auckland CBD
What is it with inconsiderate drivers in NZ when transporting horses?
After a very quiet six months it appears the equine market has picked up once again
Here we go again - rehoming the racehorse
I'm lucky in the sense that Moose hasn't picked up the usual racehorse habits such as wind sucking, box weaving or crib biting
Guy Fawkes - possibly the most stressful weekend of the year for all animals
Recently Moose and I have been doing a lot of leading sessions
After some very good progress, Moose had his first show outing last weekend
Moose has been relaxing a lot quicker under saddle, and starting to enjoy his work (rather than making attempts to run back to the gate, jib or call out to his stablemates back at the stables)
While racehorses spend most of their time cantering or galloping for a living throughout their racing careers, it's not the ideal canterwork needed for a competition career
Hi again - it seems like an eternity since my last post, but things have been so busy around here during the run up to the Horse of the Year Show, I've had little time for writing
We're already into April and my horses' coats are all beginning to turn. I never like this time of year as we have to say goodbye to glossy summer coats and daylight saving
The Friesians' ongoing progress proves to us that longer, more thorough training always pays off
Hi again. It seems like an eternity since I wrote my last entry, so I do apologise. It's funny how time just keeps ticking along and before we know it we're already looking June in the face
Well here we are at the beginning of another August and our equines turn another year older
Jenny Chandler and her beautiful part Arab mare, Lace and Fineness (Lace), have been named as part of the New Zealand Endurance team set to compete at this year's World Equestrian Games in Kentucky.
Well the horse flights are all sorted now - I hope!
If you'd like to contribute towards my fund to get to Kentucky, why not purchase this fun family game?
It was nice to be at the Cambridge Stallion Parade once again. A big congratulations to Kevin Cholmondley-Smith and the team for organising another successful show with such a great turnout
