Introducing Richard & Rosemary Newson of Sonric Suri Alpacas
National Alpaca Day (3rd May 2009) - Open Farm was a huge success!!!
Recently I have been thinking on this as I have noticed a couple of changes in my herd.
With winter settling in early this year we have only a few tasks to attend to with our alpacas at the moment.
The Alpaca Association of New Zealand 2009 Conference was held at Lincoln University - Christchurch this year and the speakers gave us a lot to think about. Everyone I spoke to at the conference said that it had been well worth the effort to attend.
When young ruminants are born, they have what is in essence a sterile gut. This gut becomes colonized by bacteria very quickly, usually with their first feed.
While Richard and I were away at the conference we made plans to visit as many alpaca breeders as we could fit in before we needed to depart the area. I would like to recommend this practice to all breeders and anyone interested in getting into alpacas
Today when I was checking my herd of alpacas I noticed an 8 month old female cria behaving abnormally. She was constantly standing up and sitting down, then rolling around, then eventually she stretched out on the ground and lay perfectly still
I am no veterinarian, but was shown by an experienced vet how to give sub-coetaneous (under the skin) injections when we bought our first alpacas
This year our much anticipated Alpaca Expo and National Sale was held in Feilding at the Manfeild Racetrack and Show Grounds
Richard and I have recently been looking into purchasing a new Stud Male in order to continue forward in our breeding programme and I thought I would give you some ideas on what process we have gone through to do this
Here at Sonric Suri Alpacas we have been very busy with guests staying in our Farm Stay Cottage, some of whom have been able to witness the unpacking of new cria
For some unknown reason we have noticed a slightly longer gestation period across our herd as well as with many other breeders that I have spoken to across the country
Apart from all the busyness during this summer season, our biggest concern at this time of year is by far FE Spores
